Even if your life right now seems hopeless, worse than it has ever been and you can’t find a single redeeming feature in it making you happy, you can still shift your perspective. You are never stuck, you are never in a place where you can’t lift your mood, little bit by little bit.  All you have to do is think back to some event or situation in the past that was a happy one.

The time when your school report had so many A pluses; the day you fell in love; going out in the bay in your brand-new speedboat; looking into the eyes of your newborn child…  whatever it was, just re-live that happy event in your mind, soak in that feeling, and you will notice that the sadness or upset of your present situation has faded away, even if it’s for a moment, and you feel the joy of that past event now, in the present.

You can stay in that joy if you don’t allow any upsetting thoughts in; but as they re-surface, turn your thoughts back again to happy events.  That’s not saying you never do anything about a painful situation; if there is something that must be done right now, you absolutely do it! If it can’t be done right now, instead of revolving angry resentful thoughts, just consistently turn your attention back to a happy past, or to the future you would want.

Life is always an average of the happy, or despondent thoughts and feelings we have. The longer you stay in positive thoughts, real or imagined, the higher your average will be; and the more you stay in sadness or resentment, the lower your average will be.

So be thinking of a future that is successful, productive, joyful, in the company of your ideal soul-mate, and with some measure of service to others or to the world – because without service, you will forever remain unfulfilled, even with millions of dollars in the bank.  The only lasting satisfaction and happiness lies in living your soul’s purpose, which is to express everything your Spirit is, in accordance with your unique gifts and talents.  And that leaves no room for sadness, resentment, upset, anger, or any of those things.
