To really live in a state of gratitude we must distance it from the idea that it is attached to some material object or some emotional feeling that we receive, or expect to receive. So gratitude is just a state of being, when you align with it, and are filled with it regardless of circumstances that may arise in your life.

The highs and the lows of life must all be met with equal gratitude, because the lows are the experiences that are designed to teach us something that so far, we have not understood or implemented or lived, while the highs are just a celebration of the learning that you have acquired in some area of life, and can be completely unrelated to that particular area, because you are a whole being, and all areas are inter-connected at the level of your being-ness.

At the surface level, we say “thank you” when we receive a gift, whether it’s a physical thing, or an immaterial appreciation of you, of who you are, or what you’ve done or said.

But we want to move from just the surface level, that could be described as “liking” to the true depths of gratitude, when we understand that it is an internal state of being, not necessarily attached to any particular situation or person or thing. Then it becomes an open space of receptivity for anything that the Universe presents, without any judgment of it.

The words “Thank you” so often feel inadequate to the situation, but when you can say them internally, with the consciousness that you are thanking the Universe for presenting you with a circumstance that is meant either for you to seize the opportunity to evolve to a higher level when you don’t like it, or to celebrate the new level you have reached because you appreciate what’s occurring.

Then those words actually move your whole being from the shallow surface to the deeper meaning, signifying to the universe you are ready and willing to receive whatever your moment-to-moment vibration is creating for you. And I can feel the waves of chills down my body as I just say those words now, with deep feeling, but with nothing they are attached to. As always, the consciousness with which you do anything, or the consciousness from which you are coming, is the most important thing, that will determine the outcome.

The energy of gratitude is an openness and acceptance, or receptivity of everything, and therefore your natural, day to day vibration only attracts beautiful things, wonderful people and experiences and a deeper connection to the Source of your being. That, in itself, is something to be grateful for!
