De-cluttering your desk de-clutters your mind.

Are you mostly peaceful, focused and happy? Or are you the sort of person that is habitually overwhelmed, scattered, anxious or in some level of fear that you’re not going to manage, there’s too much to do, that nothing works?

Last week, I noticed that I’ve been so focused on writing my book, clients, working programs and all manner of things I do professionally, that I haven’t had time to look after my orchids – and that’s a once-a-week thing on Sundays – I didn’t iron my clothes from the last wash – I haven’t made two private phone calls that I needed to do and that’s becoming urgent –  I have a stack of unopened mail on my desk that makes me sigh with frustration every time I look at it. I didn’t put away some stuff in the kitchen, and everywhere I look there are things to be done and was beginning to feel unhappy and overwhelmed.

I am not habitually like that – I am basically a very tidy person, so all this was making me feel not good at all. This was affecting my peace of mind and effectiveness. So I decided to get up an hour earlier and start dealing with all that stuff.

Prayer and meditation first, then the ironing – while listening to Derek’s podcasts because that’s also something I didn’t have time to do recently.  And it went much quicker than expected!

Then I cleared the kitchen counters – listening to more podcasts –  watered the plants on my balcony and started my official working day almost on time.  In a very joyous mood, since a good half of the clutter was gone.

At lunch-time I did my two phone calls while eating spinach and hard-boiled eggs – that’s one of my most favorite things to eat and took time for my midday connection to Spirit.  Continued to do what was on my calendar and when it was all done, including the calls I had that day, at midnight I started opening my mail.

I had totally de-cluttered my house in one day, and surprisingly, it didn’t take time away from doing what was on my calendar.  So the only thing left was my orchids which I attended to the next day. I was now peaceful going about my house and the sense of being on top of things is one of the most satisfying experiences we can have.

And I am not suggesting that all you have to do to be happy, calm and focused, is to put things away and de-clutter your home, garage or work space.   But there is a distinct possibility that the peace, effectiveness and quiet you desire will never be found while living in an untidy and cluttered environment.

So if you’re feeling anything other than contentment right now, I invite you to clean out a closet, or straighten out your bedroom, or tidy your desk, and pay attention, while you do that, how putting things in order makes you feel.

Pretty good, right?
