Happiness is what we all seek, but usually, that has to do with only the outer circumstance of our life, and our physical body.  Contentment is a different energy, and while it does have something to do with outer circumstances, it also has a spiritual perspective.

Ultimate contentment doesn’t come from circumstances at all, but from our direct connection with the Source of Life within us. That’s our ultimate aim – to live completely from this Source within us, without any regard for outer circumstances.   That’s how a person can be absolutely content regardless of the painful or unsatisfactory physical circumstances they may be experiencing.

Very few people can achieve this level of consciousness, but there are ways of achieving a certain level of contentment even in unfavorable circumstances.   One of them is by developing the ability to witness whatever is arising in consciousness or experience, without reacting to it.  Looking at it without judging it as good or bad, just as something that is.

As you practice having that witness consciousness with anything that arises, even if there are ups and downs in the human sense, you will not be completely taken off center by them.  You may be able to re-frame the event, or see if there could be a meaning to it other than the one you usually jump to: that I’m not good enough, that nobody listens to me, nobody loves me, life is unfair, life is against me…  or any other similar things you come up with.

The next step depends on where you are in consciousness and what you want.  But always, developing that inner connection with Source is job number one.  And then, having a clear and really compelling vision for your life is also really important.   If you don’t know what you want, how can you ever get anything that satisfies you?

Then the third thing is, start creating a life that is congruent with that vision.  To do that, you need to make a plan for what’s the first thing you need to do, and start doing that.  From that first step will flow the next step, and maybe two or three things you need to do. Now, you put those things on your calendar, schedule the time to do them, and keep taking consistent action towards your vision.

That’s the foundation of contentment, which in turn will give you success in your life, which will make you happy. But it all starts with practicing your connection to Spirit and knowing what you want, until those become habits, and those habits you develop become your character, and it’s your character that determines your destiny.
