Surrendering is not giving up

Confusion arises when we hear we must surrender to what’s happening, to what is. And it’s true we may not be able to change what’s happening, that things are going on all the time we can do nothing about. But that doesn’t mean we are powerless.

If we can’t change the material appearance, there is always something we can do, and that is, changing our perception and feelings about the situation or circumstance. The key is, your awareness of who you really are, and your perception about the event. So your surrender, really, is surrendering to what is inside of you, your divinity, and not to what is outside of you, the events. And letting what is inside, your divinity, inform and direct your response and your actions.

You know you are not just your human body; you are a pure undistorted expression of divinity, which is animating your body and allowing you to move, to think and to feel. However, how you move, think or feel is totally up to you; you can choose to be sad, upset or angry about a situation, or you can choose to be peaceful and allowing about it.

What you really want in life is joy, harmony, peace and happiness; being sad, angry or upset does not bring you that, so why do we keep that going?

On a more human level, surrendering means that first, you acknowledge the situation is there; you don’t have to accept it, it’s there whether you accept it or not. Secondly, you step back into your power as a spiritual being: what can I do about it? If physically or materially you can do nothing, then how about mentally, and emotionally?

What if that situation, at some point down the road, turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to you? What if that event was the quickest way imagined by Spirit to give you what you desire most in life? That’s changing your perception of the situation, and now you can start imagining all kinds of scenarios with a positive outcome, and within moments, you are peaceful and happy again.

Say you were going to board your plane and find it was over-booked and now your flight has been changed to one leaving in 6 hours, which means you will only get back home a day later and miss your presentation at the office. You could rave and rant about it and be upset and angry, but it doesn’t help the situation. You get home totally upset, go to the office next day still angry, to be greeted with surprise, open arms and joy that you are still alive – because the plane you were booked on had exploded, and there were no survivors.

Now you suddenly feel relieved, grateful, and ashamed of your reaction at the airport – you realize Spirit was protecting you, however inconvenient the facts may have been.

To live a more peaceful and happy life, let’s always take the stand that whatever happens is for our ultimate good; whether we ever actually know it or not, is immaterial.
